In 2019, a new class of Pokémon was introduced into Pokémon Go: Shadow Pokémon. The original concept was that Team Rocket had taken these poor creatures hostage and put them in a type of living purgatory. In order to complete research tasks, players had to battle Team Rocket to save an “purify” the Shadow Pokémon.

I took a lot of joy in saving Shadow Pokémon – I felt like the hours I spent staring at my phone was now an altruistic act. However, after a recent update Shadow Pokémon are now the most powerful Pokémon in the game, which gives players no incentive to save their poor souls.
